What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a form of holistic therapy, in which the therapist uses their thumb and first finger to apply moderate pressure to the feet or the hands using massage. There are points on the feet and hands which are related to some organs in the body, these are known as reflex points, a reflex point is an area in which when stimulated can bring about change in another part of the body.
The left foot mirrors the Left side of the body, and the right, the Right foot.
Reflexology dates back to around 2330 BC and was originally practiced in Egypt, India and China. Reflexology also is used to find energy imbalances that are present in the body and attempt to correct them.
Reflexology takes in to account your individual mind, body and spirit and personality traits.
The process starts with a thorough consultation in which the therapist will through a series of individual questions will assess your health needs.
Reflexology can benefit the elderly, children, men and women.
Reflexology will not make any existing condition worse, it will usually serve to improve the condition, It is important to note that any holistic therapy is not intended to replace conventional medical treatments or medications, instead it is meant as a complementary therapy to assist in the overall healing process and health of the individual.
The findings of a Reflexology are indicators, so if you carry tension in the head area (Big toe) this may mean that your shoes rub a little in that area, not that you feel tension in that part of the body.
The treatment will begin by a thorough confidential assessment to evaluate your needs, this usually takes between 10-15 minutes. The second visit consultation will be shorter as this is a check up on new medications, bruises, vaccinations and so on.
The actual treatment takes approximately 1 hour; the first visit may take longer due to the consultation period (1 hour and 15 minutes)
First of all an individual foot map will be planned, which will be used to take notes , then using that information they will create an individual therapy plan including how often should you receive treatment, how long will it take to feel the benefits, and what do you want to gain from the treatment, what areas to work on and so on.
If you are seeking relaxation and stress relief then once a fortnight is adequate, if treatment is to address a pre-existing health condition then more frequent treatment may be needed to maintain the beneficial effects of Reflexology.
After a treatment
Try and avoid stimulants where possible: Tea, Coffee, Alcohol, Cigarettes, and soft drinks for 24 hours, the aim of the treatment is to remove toxins from the body, by having one or more of these stimulants could make the treatment less beneficial and possibly make you feel worse.
and the most important thing-be kind to yourself for the next 24 hours
